Most homeowners see an installation as a delivery. From the crews side it is a levelling exercise with a heavy object involved. Stone does not bend to accommodate a cabinet run that dips, so the hours before anything is lifted into place are spent making the base flat enough that the top can sit on it without stress.
Flat Matters More Than Level
A run that slopes gently along its length is survivable. A run with a dip in the middle is not, because the slab bridges the dip and every load it carries concentrates at the two high points either side. That is how a top cracks months later with no obvious impact, and it is why shimming comes before lifting.
Seams Are Structural as Well as Visual
Where two pieces meet is decided by material size, access and appearance, but the join also has to sit over something solid. A seam floating over a dishwasher aperture with no rail beneath it is a weak point in exactly the place the surface flexes most. Good crews add support rather than move the seam.
Overhangs Have Limits
Unsupported stone can only cantilever so far before the leverage at the fixed edge becomes a problem, and the limit varies by material and thickness. Breakfast bars and island returns are where this is routinely ignored, usually because the support was designed out for the look and nobody recalculated.

Levelling and Why Cabinets Are Shimmed First

A worktop does not span between cabinets in any engineered sense. It rests on them, and it transfers everything it carries straight down through whatever is underneath. That makes the cabinet run the structural element and the stone the finish, which is the reverse of how most people picture it.
What Is Actually Measured
A long straight edge and a spirit level along the front of the run, across the depth at intervals, and diagonally on an island. The crew is looking for deviation from a plane, not for absolute level. A run that is uniformly two millimetres low at one end is fine. Two millimetres of dip in the middle of a span is not.
Shims, Packers and Where They Go
Correction happens at the cabinet feet where there is adjustment, and with thin packers on the top rail where there is not. Packers must sit under a load path, which means over a side panel or a rail, never floating in the middle of an unsupported top edge. A packer in the wrong place moves the problem rather than fixing it.
Old Floors Complicate It
In a house with a settled timber floor the cabinet feet may already be at the end of their adjustment before the run is flat. At that point the honest answer is packing under the carcass, which is a joinery job, not something to be absorbed by the worktop installer on the morning. It is worth checking during the template visit.
The Substrate Question
Thinner materials and some engineered surfaces are fitted onto a continuous ply or batten substrate rather than directly onto rails. Where that is specified, the substrate has to be flat too, and it has to be fixed down. A substrate that is itself following a dipped cabinet run has achieved nothing.
Why Rushing Here Costs Later
Every hour spent levelling is invisible in the finished kitchen, which is why it is the first thing compressed when a schedule slips. The failures it prevents are also invisible until they are not: a cracked cutout corner, a seam that opens, a sink that pulls away. None of those are repairable to as-new.

Protecting a New Surface During the Rest of a Refit

Worktops are fitted before splashbacks, before final decorating and often before flooring is finished, because everything above and behind them is measured off the surface. That leaves an expensive finished item sitting in an active work area for a fortnight, which is when most avoidable damage happens.
Cover It Properly or Not at All
Thin plastic sheet traps grit and turns into an abrasive pad under anything that slides. Corrugated board or hardboard laid over a soft underlay works, taped to itself rather than to the stone. Tape on a polished surface can leave adhesive residue, and on a honed surface it can leave a mark that needs polishing out.
The Tiler Is the Main Risk
Splashback work happens directly above the surface with wet cement products, grout, and tools placed down without thinking. Cementitious material left to dry on stone is alkaline and can etch a polished finish. Agreeing that the surface stays covered until grouting is complete removes almost the whole exposure.
Do Not Use It as a Bench
Cutting anything on it, standing on it to reach a wall unit, or resting a tin of paint on it are the three that appear again and again. Standing on an overhang is the one that causes structural damage rather than cosmetic. Say it out loud to everyone on site, because nobody assumes they are the problem.
Sequence That Reduces Exposure
Where the schedule allows, decorating above the worktop line and any dusty floor work should finish before fitting rather than after. That is not always possible, since a splashback height depends on the installed surface, but every task moved earlier is a task not happening over a finished top.
Inspect Before the Trades Leave
Uncover and inspect while the people who might have caused a mark are still coming back. A chip found six weeks after the last trade has left belongs to nobody. Found on the day, it is usually resolved without an argument, and small chips in stone are repairable if they are caught before something catches on them.

Where a Seam Should Fall

Slabs come in finite sizes, and any run longer than that has a join. Access constraints can force one on a shorter run too. Since a seam is going to exist, the only question worth asking a fabricator is where they intend to put it and why, which is a conversation that belongs at templating.
Never Through a Cutout Corner
The inside corner of a sink or hob aperture is the most stressed point on a worktop. Placing a seam so it runs into that corner combines the two weakest features in the same place. Reputable shops treat this as an absolute rule and will redesign a layout rather than break it.
Over Support, Not Over Air
A join needs something solid directly underneath, and appliance apertures are the usual offenders because there is nothing there by definition. Where a seam has to cross one, a steel or timber rail is added beneath. Ask whether that is in the quote, because it is the sort of item that gets discovered rather than planned.
Using the Room to Hide It
A seam at the centre line of a sink is conventional because the eye is drawn to the bowl and the join is short. A seam at an internal corner works because the direction change breaks the line anyway. A seam in the middle of a long clear run in a bright kitchen is the worst case and the one worth paying to avoid.
Pattern Continuity Costs Material
Carrying a vein across a join means cutting the second piece from the position that continues the pattern, which usually wastes stone. On a plain material this is irrelevant. On anything with movement it is the difference between a join you notice once and a join you notice daily.
Judging the Finished Article
Look along the seam with light raking across it, not from above. It should be flat to a fingernail, tight, and filled with colour matched adhesive rather than a generic clear. A step between the two pieces is a levelling failure. A visible gap is a cutting failure. Both are worth raising in the first week.
